Word Roots
Firmly Plants Word Meanings
Word Roots teaches children the meaning of Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes commonly used in English.
Learning word elements dramatically improves spelling, and the ability to decode unfamiliar words. This program will add hundreds of words to your students' vocabulary and greater depth to their thinking and writing.
For each lesson students learn the meaning of prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Then they:
- Divide known and unknown words into their elements or assemble elements to form whole words
- Match word parts or whole words to their definitions by analyzing their meanings
- Apply their new vocabulary in context in sentences
Includes a pretest and posttest, answers, and a dictionary of words derived from Latin and/or Greek Roots.
Word Roots interactive software lets students rebuild ancient Roman ruins as they complete their lessons.
First they must find documents that explain how to rebuild a city. After completing all the exercises students will have decoded the documents, rebuilt a beautiful 5th century city, and learned to spell and use hundreds of new words!
While they are completing activities on the right side of the screen, colorful graphics on the left show the progress they’re making in rebuilding their city.
The software is self-tutoring for independent study and has thorough on-screen and printable instructions. On-screen hints are provided for difficult lessons and the software is self-grading with printable scores.
I have had lots of great response to the software version from mothers of children who are tired of using workbooks. Children look forward to doing Vocabulary and they tend to retain what they learn!
